I am a PhD Candidate in Visual and Performing Arts at The University of Texas at Dallas whose research and creative practice focus on cinema and moving-image media. As a filmmaker and practitioner-researcher, my research interests include cinematic form and politics, the Transnational Political Image, Iranian art cinema, experimental animation, political aesthetics, and Practice as Research. Working across theoretical inquiry and creative practice, I investigate how political capacity can emerge through aesthetic and cinematic form.

Current Research

Creating a Transnational Political Image Through Experimental Animation: Bridging Resistant Strategies of Iranian Art Cinema with Anti-hegemonic Aesthetics

My doctoral research develops the concept of the Transnational Political Image through experimental animation within a Practice as Research methodology. The project establishes an aesthetic dialogue among Jacques Rancière’s politics of aesthetics, Laura U. Marks’s intercultural cinema, Hamid Naficy’s accented cinema, and the resistant cinematic strategies of Iranian art cinema filmmakers Abbas Kiarostami, Mohsen Makhmalbaf, and Jafar Panahi during the 1980s and 1990s. Through this comparative dialogue, the research identifies shared resistant and anti-hegemonic aesthetic strategies and logics and develops a theoretical framework for understanding and conceptualizing the Transnational Political Image. The findings of this theoretical framework are then translated into cinematic strategies that collectively form a practice-based methodological framework for constructing a Transnational Political Image through experimental animation. Sensorship, the experimental animated film produced as the practical component of the dissertation, functions as the primary site of inquiry through which these strategies are developed, tested, and critically reflected upon, generating new methodological knowledge through creative practice.
